A Message From The President
Dear Students:
In 1908, President Barringer established Virginia Tech's Honor System to enable students to set and maintain their own goals and values for personal conduct.  The Honor System remains today as an indication of our shared positive values.  The function of the Honor System is "to communicate the meaning and importance of intellectual honesty to all students of the University; to articulate and support the interest of the community in maintaining the highest standards of conduct in academic affairs; and to identify, sanction, and educate those who fail to live up to the stated experience of university community with regard to these standards."
Charles W. Steger
The goal of the Honor System is to promote the highest possible standards of intellectual and scholarly conduct within the academic community.  This goal is achieved by student leadership in all aspects of the Honor System. At all stages of  the honor process, students provide the majority membership on the Judicial Panels,  the Review Board, and as Justices of the Honor System.  And most importantly, most students participate by not violating their honor.
But when students do violate the Honor System, the student-run system provides sanctions on behalf of the university community and education about our shared values and high standards.
As President, I urge each of you to participate as a member of the system and most especially, I encourage you to uphold the highest standards of academic conduct.

Sincerely,
Charles W. Steger
President, Virginia Tech
